Step 1 - What is the Task Pane ?

 
 

This is new in Excel 2002. The Task Pane is a rectangular window that appears docked on the right side of your Excel window.

 
 

It acts as an open menu allowing you to select from a range of commands and functions.

 
 

It displays a list of links and commands allowing you to perfrom different tasks depending on what you are doing at the time.

 
 

The task pane is designed to help you complete tasks quickly and will change automatically according to the task in hand.

 

 

Step 2 - Displaying the Task Pane

 
 

The main advantage of the task pane is that it can be displayed at any time.

 
 

If the Task Pane is not displayed it can be displayed at any time by selecting (View > Task Pane).

 
 

If you want to close the task pane you can either select (View > Task Pane) again or click on the small black cross in the top right corner.

 
 

Using the arrow in the top right corner allows you to quickly move between the different panes.

 
   

 

Step 3 - New Workbook

 
 

 Open a Workbook - Lists your most recently used workbooks. If the workbook you want to work on is listed, just click to open the workbook. The number of workbooks displayed here is controlled from your (Tools > Options)(General tab, "Recently used file list").

 More Workbooks -

 Blank Workbook - Creates a new blank workbook. This is the same as pressing the New button on the Standard toolbar.

 Choose workbook - Allows you to create a new workbook from an existing template.

 General Templates - Open the standard (File > New) dialog box.

 Add Network Place - Opens Add Network Place Wizard so you can create and use shared folders on Web sites.

 Microsoft Excel Help - Opens Microsoft Office Assistant or Help for this application.

 Show at startup - Determines if the task pane is displayed when you initially open Excel.

 

 

Step 4 - Clipboard

 
 

You can display this task pane if it is not visible by pressing (Ctrl + "C"+ "C").

 
 

 Paste All - Pastes each item from the clipboard into the current workbook from oldest to newest.

 Clear All - Removes all items from the Office clipboard. You cannot undo this action.

 

 Options drop-down

 Show Office Clipboard Automatically - Displays the office clipboard task pane automatically when you copy more than one item.

 Collect without showing Office Clipboard - Collects items on your clipboard without displaying the task pane.

 Show Office Clipboard icon on Taskbar - Displays a small icon in the bottom right corner of your task bar.

 Show status near Taskbar when Copying - Displays the status in the bottom right corner of the your task bar.

 

 In Excel 2002 the clipboard can hold up to 24 items.

 In Excel 2000 the clipboard can hold up to 12 items.

 In Excel 97 there is no way to paste the same item multiple times.

 

 

Step 5 - Search

 
 

 Search - The word or words you want to search for.

 Restore -

 Search Tips -

 Search in - Type a path or click the arrow to select search locations from the list.

 Results should be - Select the types of items you would like to search for.

 Search Options -

 Advanced Search - Toggle between Basic Search and Advanced Search. A basic search allows you to search for text in files, filenames, or file properties. An advanced search allows you to do a more complex search. You can set search criteria based on file properties.

Step 6 - Insert Clip Art

 
 

 Search - The word or words you want to search for.

 Restore -

 Search in - Select one or more collections to search.

 Results should be - Select the types of media clips to search for.

 Clip Organiser - Opens Microsoft Clip Organizer, where you can organize your media clips.

 Clips Online - Find more media clips online.

 Tips for Finding Clips - Displays information about finding media clips.

 

 

Step 7 - Things to Remember

 
 
  • The task pane can be displayed at any time by selecting (View > Task Pane).
