What is a Template ?

 
 

A template is a pre-defined workbook (and worksheets) that you can use as the basis for new workbooks (and worksheets).

 
 

Using templates to create new workbooks that are pre-formatted and "ready to use" will save you a lot of time.

 
 

Every new workbook is based on the default template.

 
 

An Excel template has the file extension (".xlt").

 
 

You can save any workbook as a template file.

 
 

Useful if you create similar workbooks on a regular basis.

 

 

What are the advantages of using a Template ?

 
 
  • Templates can save you a lot of time and is worth having a look at the many templates that are included with Excel.

     
     
  • A template can help you create workbooks that are consistent and can help you to customise your workbooks for specific tasks.

     
     
  • If you save a workbook as a template you can create a new workbook containing the same formatting and styles by opening the template.

    What can a template include ?

     
     

    When you save a workbook as a template all the information is saved within the file.

     
     

    Formatting - These worksheets normally contain formatting and formulas, so they are "ready to use" immediately.

    When you use the (File > New) dialog box to open a template you are actually opening a copy of the original file.

     
     

    Before you open template you can see a preview to get some idea of the appearance of the workbook.

     
     

    Can templates contain more than one worksheet ?

     


     

    Where can I get Templates from ?

     
     

    You can get additional templates from the Microsoft website or from other websites

     
     

    You can easily change and customise the existing templates.

     
     

    You can obtain a large number of Excel templates from the Microsoft Office Online Templates Gallery.

     


     

    Things to Remember

     
     
  • If you have an Internet connection you can connect to the Microsoft Templates home page and obtain dozens of other useful templates.

     
     
  • If you do not see all the templates listed on the SpreadSheet Solutions tab then you may need to install the templates using your Microsoft Office software cd.

     
     
  • If you require any custom Excel templates please contact us.

     
     
  • To display a picture of the first page of a template in the Preview box of the Templates dialog box (General Templates..., New Workbook task pane), click Properties on the File menu, click the Summary tab, and then select the Save preview picture check box.

     
     
  • (Tools > Options)( ??) Change your default template directory.
