The grid is a group of evenly spaced lines that appear on your slide

SS

When you drag objects around on a slide it is possible to have them snap to the grid automatically.

This can be used to help align different objects.

The snap to grid is switched on by default although the grids are not displayed by default.

(Ctrl + G) - Displays the (View > Grid and Guides dialog box.

You can use the shortcut key (Alt + F9) to quickly toggle the display of guides.

To help you create well-ordered slides PowerPoint lets you display a grid of evenly spaced lines over a slide.

These lines are called a Grid and will not be printed.

They just help you to line things up.

Snap objects to grid - Objects will be automatically aligned to the nearest gridline.

Snap objects to other objects - Objects will be automatically aligned to other objects when they are dragged.

Spacing - The amount of spacing you want between your gridlines.

Display grid on screen - Displays the gridlines on your slides.

Display drawing guides on screen - Displays the horizontal and vertical drawing guides on your slides.

When you choose an object, select (Edit > Duplicate) or press (Ctrl + D),

This makes is easy to align the duplicate entry with the original.

If you want to take an object temporarily off the grid so you can move it to a more precise position you can hold down the Alt key while you drag the object.

or hold down the Ctrl key while you nudge the object with the arrow keys.

Also if you are moving objects "off the grid" the more you zoom in the more control you will have since the nudge factor gets smaller.
